Plastic Surgery Not Just for Breasts
When most people think about plastic surgery, they usually picture common procedures like breast augmentation, tummy tucks, or face lifts. Most don’t realize that some types of dental care can also be considered plastic, or cosmetic, surgery. Dental crowns are one example. They enhance the appearance of people’s smiles by removing gaps created by pulled or lost teeth. The right set of crowns can transform a smile from toothless to tempting in just a few…
What Is Heart Valve Replacement Surgery?
Heart valve replacement surgery is one of the most common treatments for patients suffering from aortic or severe mitral valve damage or life-threatening valve disease. The replacements can be either mechanical (made from plastic, carbon, or metal) or biological (made from animal or human tissue).Â
Mechanical valves are long-lasting, but carry a higher risk of clot formation. Patients who receive mechanical valves typically require blood-thinning medication throughout their lives. Biological valves break down rather quickly, requiring replacement every 10 years or less, particularly in children and young adults. For this reason, elderly patients are more likely to receive biological valves than youths. Â
Heart valve replacement surgery is a form of open heart surgery. The patient receives general anesthesia, and a respirator controls his or her breathing. During the procedure, the cardiovascular surgeon stops and cools the heart, and blood flows through a heart–lung machine. Cutting into the heart or aorta, the surgeon replaces the damaged valve before restarting the heart and disconnecting the heart–lung machine. The entire procedure typically takes 2 to 4 hours to complete. Â
The patient recovers after heart valve replacement surgery first in the ICU for 1 to 3 days and then in his or her room for another week. An exercise regime or cardiac rehabilitation program may be necessary to speed up recovery. Most patients resume light work within 4 to 6 weeks after successful surgery.  Medical Tourism Articles |
